Money and Property

Prison can be a tough environment, and your loved one may struggle to access basic necessities beyond what is provided. A small financial contribution or permitted property can make a huge difference to their wellbeing, helping them stay connected and focused on rehabilitation.

How to send in money

In the UK, there are safe and official ways to send money to a prisoner:

  1. Online Payments: The quickest and easiest way is through the government service at GOV.UK. You’ll need their full name, date of birth, and prisoner number.
  2. If you cannot use the online service: You may be able to apply for an exemption if you are unable to use a computer, smart phone or the internet or if you do not have a debit card. If the exemption is approved you will then be allowed to send in money by post.

Alternatively you may be able to apply for a debit card by setting up a basic bank account.

Other items you can send in

Prisons have strict rules on what items can be sent in. The process by which items can be sent in varies by prison. Some prisons allow parcels directly from family members, others only allow items to be ordered from certain approved catalogue providers. There are often time limits on when property can be sent in, this may be a set period following a prisoner’s arrival at an establishment or linked to their birth month. It is important to check with the prison where your loved one is being held before sending in items to ensure property reaches them via the approved route. Some commonly allowed items include:

  • Books & Magazines – these are usually ordered through and sent in directly from an approved retailer.
  • Clothing – each prisoner has a clothing allowance i.e. the number of each item of clothing they are allowed to have with them in the prison. What is included varies by prison. Some prisons allow families to send in items to supplement what the prisoner arrives with or to replace worn items. Contact the POPS’ Family Engagement Worker for more information about the prison you are visiting.
  • Religious clothing and other items required to practice your faith.

What You Can’t Send

Certain items are not permitted, including:

  • Mobile phones, SIM cards and smart watches
  • Cash or prepaid debit cards
  • Food and toiletries
  • Sharp objects or anything that poses a security risk

To avoid issues, we recommend checking with the prison directly or reaching out to us for advice before sending any items.
