This week is the final week for submissions to be made to the Ministry of Justice around their proposals to ‘Transform Rehabilitation’. Described as ‘a revolution in the way we manage offenders’ the consultation describes the Government’s proposals for reforming the delivery of offender services in the community to reduce reoffending rates whilst delivering improved value for money for the tax payer.
For years POPS and many other organisations have championed the role of families in the rehabilitation of offenders. Stable and supportive families have been proven to reduce the risk of reoffending and families are central to desistance theory and yet they continue to be overlooked in government policy regarding offenders. These proposals unfortunately persist with this trend in ignoring the essential contribution of families to rehabilitation and the need for support services that reflect the issues facing offenders and their families upon release from prison.
